No one is saying "Fire McVay!" No one is saying "McVay is a lousy HC!" McVay has been granted god-like status and has had 1,000's of positive things said about him here.
But say something critical...
I find the analysis interesting...positive and negative. But...it is analysis. What would the board be if the analysis was..."McVay was great." "McVay was horrible!" " McVay made us a winner so I defer to him." ??? I'll tell you what it would be...boring.
All we are saying is that he called a bad game, especially in Q4. He refused to take what was given to him. We had the lead and he continued to throw while Goff was being sacked. He continued to throw while we were getting 7 yards a carry. That isn't good and the criticism is fair...and the truth.
To sum it up, I'll let McVay describe it in his own words...
“I thought I put us in some horrible spots throughout the game [by] really getting impatient, forcing things that weren’t there,” McVay said, via Vincent Bonsignore of The Athletic. “The players bailed me out finding a way to get a win. … The cold didn’t really dictate the play selection. If anything, the cold might have just affected my brain with some of the decisions I made.”On a positive note, while his play calling became eerily Martz-like, his statement after the game was nothing like Martz, which was great. (BTW...still a Martz fan here but understood his weaknesses). Can you imagine how the board would erupted if McVay said anything close to "Shoot, we'll fix that!" ?
The game was a lot closer than it should have been and was placed in jeopardy. Fortunately we still won.
Now...let's hope McVay really learns from it and move on. This time next week, we'll have something else to talk about.
