Good stuff here from Colin....

All IMO obviously BUT ....I think what he offers there is all the normal misunderstandings. Look closer and things are a bit different, really.

There's no doubt that McVay is a great offensive coach (with some room for improvement as a head coach, and wow when that happens....).

But he took over a stacked talent list. One that was young and had not "arrived" but still.

The idea that Goff would be nothing without McVay is nonsense. Though of course we also all know that Goff + McVay is a real good formula.

Gurley had a bad year in 2016 for a lot of reasons--mostly him (McGinnis says he was playing hurt).

Aaron Donald. Brockers. Saffold. The young OL-sters. Littleton. Barron. Last year was the only time in the history of the pro bowl where all 4 special teams spots went to guys from the same team.

If owners listen to this video, believe it, and apply it, they will be learning the wrong "lesson."

It is NOT the case that you measure a coach by overnight turnarounds.

I have never seen any NFL overnight turnaround that did not happen without there being prime talent on the roster before the new guy arrived.

McVay/Snead didn't have to build a team, they only had to complete it. That's a different thing.

By 99 Vermeil had a total of 6 guys on the entire roster who were there in 96 before he arrived. And the new guys he had to find include his Goff (Warner), his Gurley (Faulk), his Saffold (Timmerman), his receivers (Bruce was a lot to inherit but they needed more)...etc.

By his 3rd year the McVay/Snead Rams will have extended more guys than that. They will certainly have kept more. And I mean starters.

So what lesson would McVay teach me as an owner? (Cause I do plan on being an owner some day. Soon as I have paid off my car.) Well...hire a bright offensive coach who ALSO knows how to maximize the potential not just players but the other coaches too (Kromer has always been good for example but he has never done better).

Not, measure things in terms of overnight turnarounds.

If the 2017 Rams were a genuine and actual complete rebuild project. like what Vermeil inherited, we would see the potential but the results would not have been overnight.

....

I agree with you that McVay inherited a ton of talent. I've argued the same when they got rid of Fisher and after they picked up McVay.

But where I disagree with you is that you reduce it all to talent. It's more than that though. I'm gonna refrain from using a seven letter word that starts with a C and ends with an e...since I recall you don't like it.

All I will say is that it seems that McVay has changed the attitudes and mindsets of all of the players certainly and possibly even that of the entire organization.

All talented teams don't win. He's injected something special, some intangible that has greatly contributed to the turnaround. All IMO of course....
