Yeah, I pretty much see it that way too. Could they upgrade from Higbee? Sure. But are they desperate to have a TE that could have 80-100 targets? Not at all.
Like others, when McVay was hired I sort of assumed he wanted to use TEs a lot and find his Jordan Reed. And when they drafted Everett that idea was reinforced. But given how smart and adaptive he is I think at this point is is FAR more about wanting to use what are huge strengths at WR and RB rather than trying to cover up for weakness at TE.
Higbee can block well and catch occasional passes. I still think there is more to come with Everett. But the odds those two combine for 8-10 targets per game are just really, really low. They are role players.
And again, I am on board with the idea of upgrading the TE spot in 2019 if it presents itself. Woods, Kupp, Cooks and Gurley are all going to be together through at least 2020 which is great. But offenses have to constantly evolve. Defenses will start catching up eventually. So may as well make one of the next iterations of the McVay offense be one where the TE is more prominent. Or at least have that option.
