If Goff had done the following
1) Hit Cooks when he was on the run and gotten that pass over the Peterson for the TD rather than thrown the int
2) Hit Cooks in stride deep for the TD rather than forcing him to slow down and catch that 57 yarder
3) Had he hit Robert Woods wide open on that 4th down play for the easy TD
and there are other plays ... people would also be talking about Goff
Goff has to do his part if he wants to be mentioned with the best
I think the night Goff had, he did his part.
Right this minute, without being perfect, Goff is playing like he's among the best. I think Waldman mentioned him and Mahomes as his highest graded QBs this year...unless I'm mistaken and misheard that. If he's not getting that type of recognition from the masses, that's more on them and their slowness to recognize than on Goff.
He can do better for sure, there is room for improvement. But if he consistently did all of the things you're talking about, his name would change from Goff to Rodgers.
I'm all for having high expectations but let's keep it in perspective.
Waldman has what I consider the best draft guide on QBs out there. He calls it his Rookie Scouting Portfolio.
He had Mahomes and Goff as his 2 highest graded QB over the last few years respectively. I do remember that he loved Russell Wilson coming out in 2012, so I don't know when he started doing the RSP.
I do know that he was raving about Mahomes last year as a very special QB. Waldman is doing a lot of I told you so stuff right now. He's kind of funny about it on twitter.
And obviously, Waldman is a big Goff advocate. He's got a lot of faith in Goff being really good.
