The Rams essentially paid Hav for the flexibilty it gives them. If they didn't extend Hav then they would be forced to find a new RT. There's an opportunity cost in drafting a guy to play RT because obviously you then can't use that pick at another position.
And the Rams paid for that flexibility at a time when they could afford to. This is a move I don't think the Rams will make in 2020.
So if the Rams end up with a reasonable alternative for 2019 they can move on from Hav with a minor cap hit. If not, then Hav stays.
Without the extension Have would have been a FA after this season. I for one am glad that issue is off the table.
But see they have to replace someone. If it's not ROT it's just something else.
The issue for me is that ROT is by far easier to replace.
No matter who they extend there's someone they don't extend. And so no matter who they extend there's an opportunity cost at another position.
It's not an issue for 2019. It will be once they have to pay both Goff and Peters, and as the costs of the Donald and Cooks deals start escalating.
