Hav'e contract is structured so that he could be cut after 2019 without a big hit to the cap. [
overthecap.com]
But I'm convinced already that Hav will be one of the Rams' core players thru this contract and possibly beyond.
I wouldn't make a right tackle a core player.
Right tackles are right tackles for a reason. It's because (with a handful of exceptions) there's more human beings who can play right tackle than left tackle.
Besides, the real question is, is Hav harder or easier to replace than any player they will lose because they signed Hav?
I agree that there's a good chance he's gone after 2019. Not because he's a bad player because he isn't a bad player. He's solid. People who study film and rank ROTS rank him anywhere from 11th to 15th or so. It's because you need to save core big contracts for players who are more than just solid and who are harder to replace.

I don’t disagree with your premise, zn. In fact, I think it’s spot on.
But so far I have to say that the Rams have been doing a terrific job of extending their elite type core players. Only when (or if) that becomes no longer possible, THEN it’s time to prune the “solid” types. But meanwhile, let’s try to have our cake and eat it, too. Lol.
I'm honestly confused why someone would be upset we extended one of the better RT's in the league???
I think there is some disagreement on whether Hav is one of the better RTs in the league. I don't see him that way.
Decent and solid are my descriptors for him. The Rams may well have a higher opinion of him.
Also I don't see anyone upset per se...
Yeah no one's upset. It's not an emotional issue.
It's a philosophical discussion about who you extend and who you don't, given that sooner or later, the Rams are going to have to be selective when it comes to that.
In 2019 the Rams have 10 top contracts (over 6 M): Donald, Whitworth, Cooks, Brockers, Gurley, Peters, Barron, Goff, Havenstein, Talib. They also have appx 36 M in cap space. So right now it's not an urgent issue. But eventually they're going to have to pay Goff more than 30 M, and also pay Peters a lot too (17 M?) (he's on the list of 10 for 2019 but at only 9 M right now), and at that point, they won't be able to afford
10 guys. They will have at least (probably) Donald, Goff, Cooks, Gurley, and Peters. With Goff costing then what 3 guys cost now, how many can they keep besides the key core 5? (BTW I just want to add that the Key Core 5 was my favorite top 40 style british invasion band of 1966).
