Not criticizing McVay’s decision in particular, but rather the situation in general.
PS games are currently a ripoff from the fans pov. TV, too, for that matter. The networks deserve a better product to broadcast.
The solution is right under their noses.
Go to only 2 PS games.
Have 18 regular season games.
Put in a second bye week.
Increase rosters to 63.
Increase actives to 55.
Have cutdowns after each PS game, not all at once.
Have scrimmages at least once a week from camp through the 2 PS games. Should be invaluable in evaluating players.
Everybody wins. Young players, coaches, networks, and most importantly, the FANS. You know, the ones that pay the freight ultimately?
If top college teams/coaches can do without 4 exhibition games (yeah, exhibition), then the pros certainly can.
It’s NOT that complicated. If put to a vote, the fans would approve the above overwhelmingly.
That would all be fine with me. Not what I would choose personally maybe but I wouldn't kick it out of bed either.
I like preseason games for the rookies, 2nd string etc. I am leery of it for starters... especially stars. They need to get the minimum amount of work in that they need to be effective. Anything more is just not worth the risk. IMO
I think fans will talk with their wallets.
For me, preseason is not about entertainment in a casual fan sense. For the more casual fans, if they are expecting significantly more than the coaches getting film on players and the players getting some work in, then I think they will be disappointed in the "product". But for me it's not something I watch to be entertained by, unless noting how some of the players are faring is entertaining... I guess to me it is.
For me personally, I would play the starters in game 3 for about 2 quarters and then also in game 4 for about a quarter.
I agree about expanding the roster a bit. Jeez. Why hasn't that been changed?
