I look to the experts who have succeeded in this game. They aren't sitting players all preseason.
Of course maybe guys like Belichick, Parcells, Zimmer, Vermeil, Shanahan, etc. just don't know what they are/were doing.
You're acting like a declaration of war is being debated when really we're just debating whether we want fries with that.
It's one game where neither team fielded starters in game 2 because they play each other in week 1, which is an unusual situation.
And how does Gruden rank in your list of coaches who usually play starters in game 2? He rank up there with the guys you list? Because he didn't field starters either.
Meanwhile, last year, when the Rams DIDN'T face an opponent in game 2 they were playing in week 1 of the regular season, the Rams played the starters.
So all this heavy invocation of NFL tradition and history is beside the point.
Neither coach yesterday fielded starters in game 2 because they were playing each other when it counts in week 1.
I would be more persuaded if you went through your list of coaches and told me how many fielded the starters in pre-season game 2 against an opponent they were playing in the first regular season game.
You don't have to be an expert to figure that out either. It's simple. Virtually no one has ever been in that situation. If in fact anyone has (at least not in the modern era.) So we don't know how they would react. We just know that one superbowl winning coach (Gruden) did the same thing McVay did under those circumstances.
Which doesn't mean the starters will get no time this pre-season and I am really puzzled why anyone would think it would mean that.
