Rams training camp notes: Backup QB situation, rookie to watch

The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up their third week of training camp and their first preseason game, but not all is well for Sean McVay’s squad. They were trounced by the Ravens 33-7 and they now have a backup quarterback conundrum after Sean Mannion laid an egg in Baltimore.

There were a few bright spots, however, most notably among the rookies.

Backup QB problem developing

Sean McVay opted to rest all but two of the Rams’ primary starters against the Ravens last week, a decision that he admittedly had a tough time making. As a result, Sean Mannion played the entire first half, but it wasn’t pretty. He completed 3 of 13 passes for 16 yards and an interception, failing to move the ball with any success.

Due to his struggles, the Rams now have a quarterback problem on their hands. McVay will have to determine whether Brandon Allen or Luis Perez can handle backup duties behind Jared Goff, or if the Rams need to go out and sign a free agent to replace Mannion. If Goff were to go down with an injury, Los Angeles would have a tough time winning many games.

Rookie watch

Micah Kiser is a guy hasn’t made much of an impression in training camp, but he was all over the field against the Ravens. He made a game-high six tackles and filled running lanes the way Alec Ogletree failed to last season. He’ll look to keep up his strong play heading into the next preseason game and eventually Week 1.
