this season....I just would be happy if he was the same steady type he was and those around him improve him.
He needs to improve in clutch game situations. The NFC is so stocked with top teams that unless you have a clutch qb who plays consistently the same in clutch situations, including tough close games against top opposition, then it's hard to go anywhere.
There's a stat called
"%Passes Comp, Late & CIose" which obviousy means late in close games. It's here: [
stats.washingtonpost.com] .In 2017 Goff ranked 32nd in the league. We don't need the stat though--an example is the Phil game, when the Rams offense had 2 chances to clinch the game or win in the final 8 minutes and couldn't do anything. (A lot of that was the D too but they addressed the D in the off-season).
He also needs to play better against top opposition. This is a comparison between him against (1)
playoff caliber teams with top defenses, and (2) all the other games they played.
AGAINST THOSE TOP TEAMS:
Passing
Avg. att: 33
Avg. comp: 19
Avg. yards: 212.4 … would be ranked 20th
Avg. comp %: 57.6%…would be ranked 31st
QB Rating: 90.58 …would be ranked 16th
AGAINST ALL OTHER TEAMS
Passing
Avg. att: 32.4
Avg. comp: 20.45
Avg. yards: 272.8 … would be ranked 5th
Avg. comp %: 63.1% … would be ranked 13th
QB Rating: 102.95 …would be ranked 3rd
....
That's a nice breakdown and something I did notice last season, that he struggled somewhat against the top teams. If he can improve in that area, along with the rest of the roster improvements we already have, then we'd be golden.
