Of course McVay gets credit. However, certain people are very quick to try and take away from Goff. Especially in the media let alone some random dude with a twitter handle
Goff played last year like the first pick in the 2016 NFL draft... my guess is we will continue to see him ascend under McVay’s tutelage.
People still taking shots at Goff .... even few Ram fans
I don't follow anyone close enough to know of their agendas so I'm just looking at the statement in the OP and I agree with it. I also think McVay is more responsible for the Rams success on offense than Goff was. I was delighted to see that Goff wasn't ruined in '16 but with what McVay put together I think a lot of QB's could have had success for the Rams last year.
A lot of qbs = the what, dozen and a half? or so who qualify as franchise qbs.
Versus the rest of the universe, including a lot of subpar or failed qbs and/or #2 caliber qbs.
First off, I never endorse the "search for the one and only cause of anything good or bad" approach. It strikes me personally as being unrealistic.
So given that let's reverse it.
How well does McVay do with a subpare or pure #2 caliber qb?
It's never one thing. And in this discussion that cuts both ways.
....
Cousins was just a #2 before McVay, wasn't he? From what I've seen, he's put Cousins and now Goff into very favorable situations that have resulted in production. McVay gets credit for that and I think he could have done so with a variety of other QB's. It'll certainly be interesting to see what Mannion does if he ever has to start regularly.
So no, I don't think McVay would have had to have had one of the 12 franchise QB's to replicate the production at QB for the '17 Rams. Goff wasn't even a franchise QB. Doesn't Goff pretty clearly illustrate what McVay brings to the table? Before McVay, Goff was a mess and by no means a top NFL QB. Cousins was a 4th rounder who hadn't done much. Even McCoy was completing 71% of his passes and had a 96 rating in a quarter of a season under McVay as OC.
I'm not arguing that ANY QB would have put up good numbers for McVay but I think many would. I'm glad Goff is doing well but from my armchair, he hasn't done anything that just couldn't be replicated by someone else in the same situation.
