I do agree he is worth 2 pro bowl players...which would be 22-25 million right?
But, there has to be a limit. HE isn't as valuable as Goff to the team, and we have a sallary cap. sumtin' gotta give.
Would have rather have 40 million (after tax) in the bank and a super bowl victory, or 65 million in the bank and no super bowl? I'll take the super bowl, and so would most. AD can't see that now at 27 years old, but some day he will.
And, yes, I do know that 65 mill and the superbowl vict is the best answer.
Spoilin' a super bowl run ain't fun, but it is his perogative. Ya, he really needs the extra 25 mill to live on....lol
THIS IS NOT the difference between a $120k salar and a 90k salary. the 'net' difference is the diff between living well and scraping by (in a big metro city).
I love the word ''dichotomy"---good job ZN!
Every player faces the "you should accept less than your market value" argument and when it comes to second contracts, which is the big payoff contract for most players (ie. you don't even know if you will have a third contract), they rarely if ever give a hometeam discount (in fact I can't think of anyone). It;s the market and how it works. The "but you don't need the money" arguments from we fans who want them to sign for less never makes a dent---and I think, rightly so. Our moral vision of how much money players should be content to live with is just not a factor. Some people cite Brady as an example (a lonely example) of a player content to take less...but that's not really a fair comparison. In his 2nd and 3rd contracts Brady absolutely cashed in and at one point was absolutely the highest paid player in the league. He didn't start doing the hometeam discount stuff until after that, after he had already made his 100 + a lot more millions. Meanwhile to this point Donald has been paid 11 M for 4 years, which is just laughably way below his market value as a player.
And the way I see the math yes they can sign both Donald and Goff and have room for a core group of other top contracts. I don't see the cap as an issue. They say 60% of the cap goes to your top players and in the 2020 the cap will be 200 M. That's workable. I don't have any worries there.
Same discussion came up in 2000 when Zygmunt balked at paying Warner what he was worth and went public with that sentiment. The then version of this board debated that and a lot of posters sided with management and suggest Warner was asking too much. I defended Warner then. I think it's the same thing now, defending Donald.
....
I don't remember anybody complaining about Warner getting 6 years $47M after what he had just done for this long suffering franchise???
Man I wish we still had archives of those days on the herd.....
Wow....crazy how much more money scrubs make these days than a league MVP Super Bowl winning QB less the 20 years ago
When will this "well I need $X million more than the last guy" type of cycle end??? The current system is just simply unsustainable.
It is no wonder most people are simply priced out of just going to games these days, let alone P$L's.....
