Here's the part we don't know. Who's been whispering in his agent's ear about what he possibly could get?
If he's demanding in the mid $20's, is there a team willing to reset the market for him and get close? What if he could get $24M per year from someone else?
That would equate to $96M over 4 years between 2019 - 2022.
As you can see, without knowing the low which was the offer last year and the potential high, we have no idea if he's playing this wrong or right.
Forgive me for just going over this again, but sometimes that helps clarify things. The market for 2nd contracts goes up. (2nd contracts is the real issue of course.)
Von Miller got 19 M in 2016. That's three contract years ago. If Donald's contract follows every other contract for top players, then in 2018, 19 M is a dated number.
Look at qbs. In 2015, Wilson signed for 22 M. In 2017, Carr signed for 25 M. In 2018, Cousins signed for 28 M. If Goff came up now and they offered him 2016 money (let's say that's 23 M) it would not cut it. That's a lowball.
So how much is Donald worth now? Good question. In the last board poll we had on this, the majority voted for something between 21 M and 24 M. I would say that's a fair perception.
If the Rams are currently offering 19 M that's a lowball. If Donald is asking for 25 M, that's just not that outrageous. If they compromised at 23, that would sound okay both ways to me. If he got 24 M, I would not consider that too much.
But of course as you say right now no one actually knows the numbers, and anyone claiming we do know has no real basis for saying that. It's possible to speculate but that's all it is, is speculation.
