It's very simple.
The CBA gives the Rams the rights to 1) pick up his option year (done). And then 2) Tag him for 2 years. He can scream, yell, demand a trade, and withhold his services. Result? Doesn't get paid. But is he really going to withhold his services and throw $17-$18 mil for a year in the trash can? Not unless he's self destructive.
And, yes the Rams hold all the cards. Because AD's only play is to report or retire. Or go play in Canada (where he sure as heck isn't going to earn $17 mil a year). If he doesn't sign his FA tender, and the Rams refuse to trade him, then a) he earns no money at all, and b) his only option is to retire. No way he does that because clearly money is extremely important to him.
I wasn't discussing what is legally permissable. Everyone already knows all that stuff and repeating it serves no purpose.
I was discussing 2 things.
1. whether it was right to do that, since in fact because there is no franchise tag category for "best defensive players," the DT tag amount is a lowball (in 2018 people are saying Donald should get anywhere from 20+ M to 24 M while the DT tag, which averages the amounts for players not as good as Donald, is 14 M).
2. whether Donald would allow himself to be lowballed that way and would instead sit out and demand a trade.
I doubt the Rams go that direction, since it's the wrong thing to do. Unless I am wrong about the Rams and they intend to keep him lowballed for 7 years, which sends the message "work hard for us, be the best, do everything right, and we lowball you." In which case, if I am wrong and the Rams ARE like that, the trade scenario looks even more likely.
Again we all know what the CBA says about the tag. It's not new info.
