I played for Andy for two years at Northern Arizona he was our line coach, Brad Childress was our OC and he is the smartest coach I have ever met but he does not do well with young immature athletes. Andy has that "Jedi mind trick approach" Brad was straight forward tell you like it is.
We had a non conference game against Angelo St a DII, they had a guy named Pierce Holt who later went on to play for the 49 ers, This guy was the strongest guy I have ever played against, and I benched 425lbs, he rag dolled me the TE and the tackle. Childress addressed me and Bear like we were worthless, "I have no idea why you two are on scholarship, this is a D2 who is over powering two D1 players", "you two are a F-ing joke" . After Childress lit us up, the head coach came over Larry Kentera picked up where Childress left off.
Bear and I were speechless, not only did we feel like crap, we were embarrassed and felt ashamed by no means were we motivated. Andy comes over and says, " forget that crap, I believe in you, I have two kids that call me dad, that know that you two will find a way to get this done". He elaborated on my strength and technique, he said I am asking for two seconds that is it, I need the fullback to get on the outside hip of the LB, and all I need is two seconds from you. I have him his two seconds, we were still getting posterized, but Bear and I doubled teamed, the fullback was able to get to the OLB and we now had a running game.
Andy is the most sincere guy I have ever met, he taught me you never criticize the guy you critique his performance.
I so get it what Sammy is talking about, I lived it.
