Curley is a sports reporter who has been at many OTAs over the past 2 years. He also attends all the McVay pressers and is one of the better reporters who posts what is said in detail. He’s been more active than just about any reporter. He does this podcast with Jake, a young prolific freelance Rams reporter.
He said it’s unfair to Goff to have everyone believe he looks great when he’s hasn’t. Goff is still missing deep throws, he is still inconsistent. That’s his main point. He did say Goff looked great last Monday.
We just don’t know for sure if Goff will take the big step up this year, and there really hasn’t been signs that he will in OTAs. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t expect it. I do, and there’s plenty of time between now and the start of the season for it to become more apparent to critical observers.
I agree with a lot of that BUT Curley explicitly states that his view is based on expecting certain things he believes he's not seeing.
He also directly and openly says, in these exact words, that overall JG is playing "well."
So I don't see him as an alarmist, or as more accurate than anyone else. I see him as having expectations that may or may not be realistic or valid. This is a direct quotation:
“I’m not saying he played poorly, he played well. But he was Jared Goff. He made some good passes and he had some issues. The level of consistency needs to improve in year 3.”
In terms of JC expecting something and not seeing it yet, that's just HIM. We have no idea if his expectations are realistic or important. I hear Curley and do not leap to the conclusion that no Goff is not progressing past last year. Instead I only hear THIS---that CURLEY thinks that which is not the same as saying it;s true or real or valid.
I just assume it's this way, since virtually everyone got it wrong last summer. They are adding more to the offense and so it is just simply not the case that it;s just last year's offense and they are not consistent yet. I remember controversies about INTs in practice last summer then it turns out during the season the Rams were 1st in the league in INTs thrown (meaning of course they had the least).
But when he got off his "need to see the year 3 step-up" routine, Curley directly said Goff is playing well.
If he didn't think that he should not have said
"I’m not saying he played poorly, he played well."...
