Re: after long consideration, my definition of franchise QB.

on multiple seasons...ok but why be wishy washy. lets say 3, 4 or 5. you choose. that way there is no misunderstanding on everyone is on the same page. personally i would not call a guy like goff or wentz a franchise qb yet. dont get me wrong i like both very much. i just think they need to earn the title. in addition the term "high probably" means different things to different people. it could be quantified but personally i dont see the point. rg3 and bradford (can i say that name here?) would likely by most to have the "high probably" tag after their first year but neither turn out to be so imo. the opposite is true for goff. thus imo theres just too much missing information.

unfortunately i dont share your opinion that its easy to identify teams with a replaceable qb as beauty is often in the eye of the beholder. for example you mentioned miami but they didnt even draft a qb so how replaceable is tannehil. Maybe you and I share the opinion that hes replaceable but the dolphins apparently dont. in addition, there were months and months of speculation that the giants would take a qb at 2. while they didnt do that they did draft a guy in the 4th. does that remove Eli from the franchise list? Big Ben? Pittsburg did the same thing. Does Cousins go from non-franchise to franchise simply because he found a team who wanted him? he was obviously expendable in washington but not in MN imo.

the overall problem im getting at is that you run into subjectivity when using "words" because different people attach different meaning to the words. by quantifying these terms we can remove the ambiguity.

ok, but how do you know a team is trying to replace a qb until they do. this first part is completely speculative. we could argue for days which qbs teams want to replace. and do you define sustainable? a guy who has played with the same team for at least 3 years?

My definition of a franchise QB is twofold. A Guy that a team isn’t trying to replace AND a QB that is sustainable.

I don’t think you can classify every one of those guys as sustainable QBs. In order to be sustainable you must be proven to be able to produce at a competent level repeatedly.

At the very least, None of those rookies fit that bill.

Sustainable is a guy who has produced at a competent level for multiple seasons or at least has demonstrated in a shorter period that there is a high probability that he will. In the first part, an Alex Smith. In the second part, a Jared Goff.

I don’t think it’s too difficult to determine if a team is trying to replace a QB. Just examine the teams drafting near the top of the draft. Browns, Jets, Broncos, Buffalo, Miami, Cards. It kind of jumps out at you. None of those teams were happy with their QB situation.
