My definition of a franchise QB is twofold. A Guy that a team isn’t trying to replace AND a QB that is sustainable.
I don’t think you can classify every one of those guys as sustainable QBs. In order to be sustainable you must be proven to be able to produce at a competent level repeatedly.
At the very least, None of those rookies fit that bill.
Yeah the rookies are wannabes. So is a first-time starter like Mahomes.
So in your definition, you stress consistency across time, which makes sense. That's why I don't count Foles.
But I also have clauses in the definition for saying a guy like Keenum is not really a FQB. Which is not a knock against him...he's scrappy, smart, and driven.
Another category is #2 caliber qb. There can of course be good ones and bad ones at that, too, and sometimes, with QB scarcity haunting the land, you go with one of those guys (Keenum, McCown).
I agree with you that neither Foles nor Keenum are franchise QBs. At this point neither is a guy whom their team isn't trying to replace. Whether they should be considered sustainable or not is questionable, but I would lean toward them not establishing sustainability at this point.
Actually, there is a case to be made that Garoppolo may not be franchise QB just yet. Maybe he needs more than 7 games. The point here isn't really to debate the validity of JimmyG being a franchise QB, but to ask if he should be rated as high as he's being rated by so many people.
