Goff had one really bad year, and one really nice year. I think its fair to see what he does this year before we know for sure. But, I do think its a good bet that Goff does well this year, just not a sure thing.
I think all those players on that list are on teams that believe they can build around them. TB considers Winston their franchise QB, same with Prescott, Watson, Carr, and Mariota. Although that can change after this season.
IMO, Goff didn't have a bad year. He had a bad 7 games. Not even half a season and part of that (if not all) I blame on the Middle School offense Fish and Co. tried to teach him. We all saw the difference a "real" offense and a "real" offensive coach made for Goff. IMO, if Goff would have had McVay in his rookie year, the results would have been different. In fact, I am surprised Fish didn't set him back a few years let alone ruin his entire career. Thank God he only had to deal with Fish for as long as he did.
I don't even count his first 7 games when evaluating Goff. If anything, he gets "extra" credit for being able to rebound after the Fish fiasco.
I don't buy the Standard Narrative on that.
First off the entire team, top to bottom, was overwhelmed by the move, which was predictable since it is very rare to negligible for a moving team to win the season it moves. That's so true that the LA reporters were warning about it in advance and Demoff apologized for it in advance (yep in advance). People like to neglect that for some reason but it was a huge factor. It had an effect on coaches and players alike.
Second off Air Raid system qbs have a long, long history of being so under-prepared for the pros that they just generally fail, and that goes back decades. The only ones who ended up doing decently well as pros certainly never did it in their first year. This is such a huge factor that when the Chiefs drafted Mohames, there
was article after article asking if he could overcome the Air Raid stigma. In his case they just sat him all year.
So Goff was just behinder than most. And it was predictable. Compound that with not having a running game and it gets even worse. Plus an OL that had played well at the end of 2015 but which regressed, at least in part (again) because of the move.
Fortunately for us and for McV, Sean inherited a qb who had already gone through a lot of rookie growing pains already and was absolutely NOT a rookie, but someone set to take a step up. Which he did, though of course a lot of that is also McVay too, who did a good job with Cousins so you have to figure he would do a good job with Goff too.
A lot of things went wrong in 2016.
I always just completely reject the One Explanation take on 2016. I think it leaves out too many facts and simplifies things way too much, to the point of distortion.
Not trying to change your mind on anything.
Just typing up my own vote on these issues.
