My understanding is that he is more of the coverage guy of the 2 inside ILBs.
But anyway what you say here cuts both ways and it's true both ways.
If they cut him before week 1, then, it is certainly possible to argue that they couldn't see around his shortcomings.
If they keep him then it is just the opposite. It would certainly look like they like him in the spot and are happy with his overall play.
