Yeah, you've got it. So for example, if the Rams signed him to an extension that paid $20M per year and they wanted to have 2018 pay $20M, the new amount added to the cap this year is in effect $13M.
The good thing about the cap is they can park the cap hits however they want in any year. It doesn't have to align with the average amount.
So they could have 2018's salary cap hit be only $10M and 2019's be $30M. There is a lot of flexibility in how they structure it.
