I'm not seeing the lack of 3.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage being a significant thing.
My opinion - which I believe was backed by PFF - says there was no drop off in run D. If anything, he's getting better.
Bottom line for me on AD is, 2017 was his most dominant season to date despite the scheme change, the missed time, and the rusty getting up to speed period.
That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. At this point, we really should agree to disagree.
Wade would throw Suh in there - like he did Ethan Westbrooks who btw also had no NT experience - and he would dominate, fit or not. Why? Because he's a great player.
.
It's not the difference of 3.5, for every stuff there are near misses that maybe someone else gets or that end up a no gain (not a stuff) so the drop of in DOnald's stuffs spread through the defense, your top guy drops, the defense also drops.
From 2012-16 Rams averaged 60 stuffs a season, last year HALF that. Not all on Donald but some of it is,
Year — Stuffs
2012 — 59
2013 — 60
2014 — 50
2015 — 65
2016 — 60
2017 — 33
in 2015-16 Rams averaged 3.97 yards a rush against. In 2017 it was 4.68. So there WAS a dropoff and Donald's run defense was part of that.
Next,. PFF does not track the things you say they do. Do you even subscribe? The do a -2. -1. 0, 1, 2 scoring system and then they take the score on run plays and divide by the number of run plays and get a percentage. Same with pass plays. So you are wrong PFF does not capture what you say it does
As far as Suh, and your quote "'he's never lined up anywhere else but 3-tech' narrative."
Suh has never been a dedicated 3-tech. He's played both shade and 3-tech and where the defense calls for. I am beginning to wonder if you know what a 3-tech is. That is okay, but it would help in terms of this conversation.
As far as Westbrook and your statement "Ethan Westbrooks who btw also had no NT experience" is false. He backed up Brockers in 2015. Wade moved him there because he had experience playing NT. Here is a still.
I always say stats are not the only thing, however, they do mean something. Like Watkins and the most important stat= 8 TDs. With Donald there is something there. In 2015 he made 69 tackles and 13.5 stuffs plus 11 sacks, in 2017 he had 41 tackles and 6.5 stuffs and 11 sacks. The defense held opponents to 4 yards a rush, in 2017 it was closer to 5.
Suh is not coming to LA, so it does not matter. But he's not someone Wade could plug in and play NT and get NT-type things from. That's not his game. You wouldn't play Dr J at power forward, either. Could he stand in and play there? Sure, but he would not be the Dr J who was a dominant small forward. Same with Suh at NT between Donald and Brockers
But just look at the difference in tackles between 2015 and 2017. He averaged 12 stuffs a year before and in 2017 it was 6.5 and if you prorate for the 2 missed games it jumps to 7.5, His run defense, for whatever reason, lacked the big plays he had made in the past so your contention that he's getting better versus the run just isn't borne out by the numbers or the film.
