This whole how much is 'coach' and how much is 'player' thing is TOUGH to gauge. I certainly don't have the answer... just an opinion:
I'm sure, (it was said), the O was... and I hate to use the phrase 'dumbed down' because I don't think that's very accurate... but for lack of a better phrase, dumbed down for Goff. At the same time... I don't think it was nearly as 'vanilla' as many think. My guess is that during the season there were plenty of 'non-dumbed-down' plays called - in fact, I can't even imagine that not being the case.
I agree with you that in certain circumstances he was given half the field to look at... very specific circumstances involving opponent, game situation, and eye in the sky analyzation. I think that occurs with nearly every QB... even Brady - the difference with Brady being that WITH years of experience even a 'hard play call' he is able to adjust to in real time. And almost certainly it occurred a lot more with Goff than the more experienced QB's in the league. Goff has yet, however, to build that wealth of real time wisdom from which he can call on when needed.- JamesJM
