Austin doesn't seem to fit. Neither does Watkins IMO. But it was year one for McVay. He could have just been trying to keep it more simple and not bite off more than he could chew while getting his feet wet. And who can argue with the results. I too am disappointed but elated at the same time.
I think Watkins and Austin should just be let go unless McVay's first season as HC wasn't representative of what he really wanted to do... Like a lite version of his offense and the full O is coming... Well wouldn't that be interesting. But my guess is that McVay is rigid with his system and only certain players will fit. Kupp and Woods are not better WR's than Watkins IMO but you wouldn't know it from last season.
Kind of like saying Keenum sucks, Goff is a bust, Foles is terrible... etc... sometimes it takes the right system. But it's just easier to say the player sucks. Why on earth would Buffalo let Woods go? And why was Watkins the budding star in Buffalo? And now he is a disappointment, Its a distinction that isn't made that the player's production was disappointing but not necessarily the player. At least that's the way I see it.
Some of us were talking about McVay being a wizard that would get Austin open with some room to run... He made Schotty look like the genius there BUT McVay didn't need Austin, so why use the time to scheme him open when the system is working? Leading the NFL in PPG? I'm not complaining. Austin, Scmaustin'... Long live Kupp!
