there are other WRs even on the FA market that could give us pretty much what Watkins gives us, at less money. .
And is this about money or about winning. I have said it before and will say it again and again, Watkins helped the Rams WIN on 2017. Stat watchers and fantasy football numbers are not the be-all and end-all.
It's like people watch the games and just do not SEE what is going on.
This guy is best WR Rams have had since Ike and Torry and the 3 WR set we had in 2017 is best since Ike, Torry, and Curtis and people want to penny pinch like it's their money.
If you want to risk losing and bringing in a guy with 1/2 Watkins's skills for less money, but it will make Rams offense far less effective because Watkins was a money player last year.
I don’t think this winning vs spending money is a legit either/or question, B&G. There’s plenty of room between those 2 extremes.
Not wanting to pay franchise tag money is not the same thing as penny pinching.
Look, there’s lots of moving parts on this Watkins extension issue.
We all agree that Watkins has potential but the fact remains that he caught 39 passes for 593 yards, although that included 8 TD’s. We all expected a helluva lot more in a contract year.
He will be but one of 5 possible receivers on any given play in McVay’s spread it around O.
We do have other inexpensive potential deep threats in Reynolds, Thomas, and Maybe even Cooper as possible alternatives.
We shouldn’t minimize the cost factor in this day of cap ceilings and multiple other positions requiring upgrades, as well.
Other less expensive FA options in lieu of Watkins will be out there that are at least 90% of Watkins’ perceived deep threat that opposing D’s must honor.
I can see both sides of this Watkins issue. For me, the prudent choice is to try to sign him for $10 million per, if possible. This would include a concession of around an extra $3 million for his “potential” beyond what he actually produced. If a multi-year extension can’t be done, then I would suggest a one year “prove it” contract at around $10-12 million.
But I think paying him like a Julio Jones or Antonio Brown just makes no sense. He hasn’t earned it, tbh. Not yet, anyway.
