I don't think Austin ever proved worthy of that deal. I can see giving him his 5th year option for 2017 but honestly that's about it. Had they just done that they wouldn't be on the hook for a dime in 2018. It was a very head-scratching deal that I think somehow was done for the Hard Knocks cameras.
Naw, it wouldn't be done for that reason. Honestly, when we think bad things of a team, it's possible to push hyperbole way beyond any reasonable limits. No one does anything like that for Hard Knocks cameras. Or let's hope they were not THAT stupid (based on the simple premise that NOBODY is THAT stupid) because the same people who did contracts then are doing them now, and, if they DID do something that surreal and stupid, they will do something that surreal and stupid again.
Fisher did not have the power to order contracts people to do what you're claiming. Demoff did not report to Fisher.
The far more likely view? When you get 9 offensive TDs from a guy both running and passing then it is possible to think he is worth that money (which, in spite of some opinions, is just simply not top tier money). Plus at the time they also saw him as a homerun hitting returner and a very effective decoy.
IMO people are mistaking what McVay used him to do for HIM. That was just McVay not interested in using him those ways.
