Draft Commentary: With free agency done, there are no acute needs except for NT. I think this is Snead’s goal every off season.
LOT.
This has come up before but here's the problem with finding an LOT. I looked at the decade from 2006 through 2015, and out of 122 OTs drafted after round 2, only 6 ever became continuing starters at LOT. That's just less than 5%. That means that if you want a left OT, you either luck out in free agency (like the Rams did in 2017) or you use the 1st or 2nd rounds.
How great is the need for a left OT? I would say pretty big. AW is not getting younger and last year he slipped a bit.
But then on top of it, you face the same issue with Sullivan. Plus the other 3 are all FAs after this season.
That means any LOT they take this year in round 1 either could be replacing AW in 2019, or if AW is still going, he could be replacing Hav in 2019 while waiting to replace AW down the line ("down the line" being sooner, not later).
Plus on top of it, they completely lucked out in terms of OL injuries in 2017. The last season they had that kind of OL injury luck was 2010. Before that it was 1999.
So you want quality depth anyway for the 2018 season, especially at tackle.
Meanwhile this crew (Snead & co.) have had a tremendous run finding DBs. That continued with Phillips. I trust them finding CBs lower in the draft more than I trust anyone finding a viable starting LOT lower in the draft.
