They are paid according to the market.

So it goes like this.

There's a certain amount you have to pay a qb when he is up for his 2nd contract, and that amount goes up annually. If you don't pay that amount, someone else will. So you then decide---do I want to hunt for another qb, or pay this one, and keep him as the starter?

It has nothing to do with who he is as good as or better than. IF you determine he is your starter and you don't want to replace him, you pay what the market that year says you pay starting qbs up for their second contract.

So the question teams ask is not "is he as good as Brees?" The question is "do we want to start over at qb, or not?"

Well said zn. I like the way you worded that. (No Goff comparison or Goff bashing) He was their best option at the time. Now that Cousins is available, KC might have been a better option IMO. Time will tell for sure. I wonder if they still would have paid him knowing KC would become available.

Well my view is this. They traded for him, they like him as a leader, they like how they can use him, they have seen him in the lockerroom, and it's doubtful Cousins is much better.

So it's pay JG what the market says you pay qbs up for their second contract that year, or you don't.

And the on the field value of qb is shifting anyway. The Eagles just won with Nick Foles. That;s in spite of the fact that 7 of Foles's last 15 starts, including with the Eagles in 2017, are miserably subpar. But you can win with a guy IF your team has other things.

So what's the difference, viewed that way, between JG and KC? They know JG and there's less disruption keeping him.

The big difference between the to IMO is the experience factor. KC has played a lot more real NFL games and has done pretty well. JG could very well be the real deal. He has certainly "flashed" signs of being talented but IMO it is a bit too early for me to "crown" him king (as some seem to want to do. Not saying you are) just yet.

As a Rams fan, I am hoping he goes down in flames taking the whole franchise with him!
