Thanks---been a stats guy since I was 10 years old. Memorized the entire sports page of rushing/WRs stats every week. But the stats PFF shows us belies me eyes.
After observing 4-6 games every week from the NFL this year, this is how I think Goff stacks up
in the 'overall' scope of being a QB---taking into account the 'system', the O lines, managing the game, the WRs etc. and decision making etc.
I mention theses QBs below because they were 'rated' higher than Goff:Goff is:*Hugely better than Tyrod
Taylor---who was benched this year. Taylor doesn't look like a Pro QB to me.
Maybe he is really smart, but he is missing some basics. Relies too much on athleticism, which won't work against
great Ds week in and week out in the NFL.
*Significatly better than
Mariotta--though he played hurt a lot.....and this happens to QBs dependent on legs (Wentz). Mariotta also looks a lot like Prescott in pressure situations--kinda lost. Mariotta will become a pro bowler with the right coach and system. And, maybe better than Goff.....maybe....
*Significatly better than
Prescott. Goff's system and coach make this a huge part of Goff being better than Prescott overall. However, you can't miss the fact that Prescott misses a lot of important throws, and maybe was 'insulated' by the overall success of the 2016 Cowboys (Goff certainly was 'insulated by McVay, too)...and Prescott doesn't look like he understands the game like Goff...not even close on pressure etc. However, Prescott is great against Blitzes (legs or mind?). BUt to me, He doesn't look like a 'winner' overall, while Goff does.
*Much, much and much better than
Bortles: he misses a lot of throws, and even the throws he makes don't seem to have very good anticipation. Doens't look like a professional QB throughout the course of an entire game. Yes, I saw the 45 (38) points he put up last week.
*Functionally Better than
J Winston--Winston is the anti-Goff in all ways. I still believe Winston will get to the pro bowl...I think he will become a good QB, it may take about 3-5 years though. Winston was 2nd vs pressure---that means something. Winston had some really bad games....and when the QB costs you the game that is a killa. Also, I don't think Goff cost the Rams one game---not even close. How many QBs can say that. [ya, Goff was insulated, a lot, I know].
*Well, call me insane, but I believe Goff is every bit the QB that
Drew Brees is right now. I have seen 8+ Saints games this year, and believe Goff is right there. I know it is hard to compare GOff to Brees, emotionally, considering all that Brees has accomplished, but like Goff, Brees has a 'system', WRs, great coaching and a great Line--he is "insulated" or
babyied. I don't take this back. I also think that at this point Brees is managing the game well, and yet is not making so many big time throws or good deep throws---despite the data that PFF gives.
*Believe Goff is equal to, or better than
Keenum....and will be much better next year.
Other notes:
*Cam Newton is sooo far down the list. I have always compared him to McNabb. More a winner than a traditional-great QB--almost impossible to grade because of his awesome skills (albeit inconsistent thrower). Cam also reminds me of Winston....loses some games, can't recognize what throws to make at the important points in the game. However, he also played well enough to win that playoff game. He is top 15, not 28th.
*Aaron Rogers played that much worse in 2017??Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/16/2018 10:46PM by Steve.
