I think defensively the personnel changes were pretty modest last year but offensively switching out the two most critical OL starters plus dumping their top 3 WRs all at once was a big move.
I'm not against taking a LT at #23 if it shakes out that there is someone there really worth taking. But it's definitely not my preference. Especially without a 2nd round pick. I would much rather upgrade the 3rd OT spot from Williams so there is better depth and then dive in for a LT in the 1st or 2nd round of 2019.
Well you're talking impact and I am talking numbers. But even focusing on impact, you can't ignore things like inheriting both a pro bowl qb and a pro bowl RB. Heck name another team that had TWO players as legit candidates in league MVP conversations. Both were inherited and that is HUGE.
They used free agency well and it gave them some pieces on the OL and at WR and they were good good bang for your bucks type signings but the Rams are not the Rams on offense unless they have Saffold (their best lineman), Goff, Gurley, and other starters like Brown, Higbee, and even Austin.
Adding Whitworth to nothing does not give you a team. Adding both Whitworth and Woods to nothing does not give you a team.
In fact if you go through NFL history, the VAST majority of the time, when you see a one-year turnaround, it's because the new coach inherited a lot of talent. The 2017 Rams are no different.
This is nothing like what Vermeil went through. Demoff said it himself before they even interviewed McVay---this is not a rebuild. That's a direct quotation.
And don't forget special teams. McVay inherited 3 pro bowlers (kicker, punter, returner) and special teams units that were among the best in the league plus guys who could block punts. It made a difference in at least a couple of games.
