It is NOT an issue of saving dollars, when it comes to possibly letting guys like TruJ or Watkins walk.
It is an issue of allocating those dollars to the right guys to maximize those dollars' effect, because the league sets an amount that you cannot exceed.
What good does it do to overpay 3 or 4 guys, not leaving yourself enough to pay for other positions.
The NFL has a hard cap. You can't exceed it and there is no magical way of getting around it.
Never that I ever recall have the Rams tried to be cheap to "save dollars". You've got to have enough to spread it around to get sufficient talent and depth.
This is what the Rams FO is wrestling with as we speak. And of course as fans and posters we might not agree with their choices.
As for Watkins: I think Snead will make a real run at keeping him so that he doesn't have to hear that he gave up a good young CB and a 2nd round pick to rent a player for year. But Demoff will be sure that keeping Watkins doesn't short them somewhere else. And therein lies the rub of it all.
