I admit I'm not a guy who can look at a QB (or any player) and judge the technical aspects of his play. But I just don't see Darnold being ready.
I see a QB who has a good enough arm (but by no means a great arm).
And he has good athleticism. Apparently is well liked and coachable.
But there is something missing. He is inconsistent.
He commits too many turnovers and often at the worst possible time. And too many of them are head scratchers. I don't think he processes info fast enough and doesn't see the field well enough or perhaps is easily fooled. And if it is that way in college, what's it going to be in the Pro's?
I think he could be more Matt Barkley than Matt Stafford.
At best he just needs more development. He really should have stayed in college another year, assuming he's getting good coaching (I don't know). The problem is, who drafts a QB in the top 3 and doesn't immediately play them even though they need more time to learn the offense and get their skills honed for couple of years?
Look what happened to Goff in year 1. But to me, Goff was a superior prospect to begin with. And of course, like Goff, if Darnold is drafted as the 1st or 2nd QB taken, he's going to wind up on a bad team, which will just amplify his lack of readiness.
I'm sticking with Mayfield as the QB that will likely to turn out the most NFL ready and the best of the 2018 bunch.
