It sounds 'whacko' today... but I can remember when LB's were, debatably, the most popular players on teams. Some mentioned in this thread. Certainly known as the 'toughest'.
Nobis I remember well from one particular play.... although who they were playing, when, I've forgotten... and it was very similar to a play I saw Butkus make as well. The RB had found a hole so had a full head of steam... Nobis was only able to set his feet and the RB came at him, at full steam, head on... Nobis didn't give an inch.. not an inch... and although he was not 'driving' into the tackle he stopped it cold, then slowly drove the RB straight backwards eventually body slamming into the turf.
I remember thinking, "That defied the laws of physics".
