the NFL just went limp on the whole thing. Spanos is beloved by owners so they could not shaft their guy, but the Rams stadium and move made so much more sense.
No body really wanted the Raiders in LA, then Spanos ties himself to the thug club and backs them into a corner.
Then they have to give the Raiders the same deal they give the Chargers since there is no way to not after Spanos brought them in as partners.
That leads to a situation where if Chargers don't take the second spot (the main and only concession over the Raiders was they get first choice) then it is possible the Raiders will.
The NFL does not want this, and so Spanos either grabs it before the Raiders can, or takes one for the team (thus why he is so beloved by other owners).
Now there is talk of moving back to San Diego because no one is showing up to their games and the Stub Hub center has no home field advantage at all as opposing teams fans fill the stands.
In the meantime San Diego is pissed off and it is not easy to just go back. There is still no stadium plan or commitment of funding from the city or other private investors, the fans feel burned, and the Chargers are caught between a rock and a hard place.
It does seem like the only solution is new ownership, but that would totally defeat the whole purpose as it was Spanos himself that allowed all of this to happen to help him out.
Other possibilities include staying in LA and hope it gets better. Move to St Louis or some other spot (Oakland is a great location but no way Chargers will be accepted in Raider nation). Find a big money savior (maybe NFL owenrs step up and find someone to fund a stadium for Spanos in SD), or some middle ground solution like Orange County kind of ike how the Rams used to be, how the Angles are, and how the Ducks are.
