I don't know what to think. Clearly, we're on the road to excellence. But it isn't clear whether we are more than that.
Thinking about the Cards under Ariens, we have always been at a huge disadvantage due to coaching. Ariens has always had the ability to figure out what our best assets we're doing and how to beat them.
Fisher had virtually no chance against him. I think he won, what, 1 game against him? Ariens just completely outcoached him.
With McV, I think we have a damn good chance. I feel that McV with the help of Phillips have the coaching weight to stand up to Ariens.
But, I think it's still hard to say how far McV has come. He's done really well as a ridiculously young rookie. But, he has not been transcendent and it is not clear to me that he is coaching a team to the level it would take to get through Ariens and then deal with a dangerous NYG bunch. I am not sure whether McV is THERE yet.
The great thing is that I feel he MIGHT be! There is real hope for this game. As you say, GRITS, win this and the way opens to serious contention.
How freaking long has it been since we have properly had hope in a situation like this? EVERY BLOODY TIME that we had a chance to win a game and step up into a respectable level, even just to get to or over .500, we would collapse like a cheap suit. Every bloody time!
This time I feel like we will be up to it. I dunno if we're ready to actually win a game like this against a really good coach who has our number ... but I'm pretty sure we'll be well prepared and we won't collapse.
That's McV. That's what having a real coach means. I am not sure he's mature enough as a coach to get us all the way to the top of the division. But he has us on our way. God, that's a wonderful thing.
