Football is a game of
mistakes. There's no other way to put it.
For example ... Goff's throw to Gurley the other day. We marvel and rave and clap our hands and talk about what a great moment that was. At the same time, on the other side of the coin, the Cowboys' defensive coaches are pulling their hair out with the *failures* of their personnel to properly defend the play.
My point ...
Does Goff still have work to do?
Of
course he does! No one is questioning that! I certainly hope ... and anticipate ... that what we are seeing today will be merely snapshots of consistent greatness a year and two and three down the line.
But ... I don't think it's fair to focus on his perceived 'shortcomings' ... when not taking into effect everything else that happened around him during the 4-of-13 finish or whatever it was. Like ... the two throws to Everett in-close that could have ... should have ... been scores. One I remember specifically was Everett slipping on his in-cut at the goal-line and being unable to get to the football. Again ... is that on Goff? Or is that on Everett?
Another was on a crossing route to Watkins who was totally focused on the defensive back in his area. Is that on Goff? Or Watkins? Maybe that was a terrible read - and he was leading Watkins into a bad situation and somebody else was open. If that was the case ... then, yeah ... that's on Goff. (Just like the success of the over-the-shoulder catch Watkins made at San Francisco is probably 60% on Watkins.)
Imo ... he made one throw that I thought was really, really bad and ill-advised ... and that was the toss to Higbee on the sidelines that was almost picked. There was *no* excusing that or finding fault with someone else. THAT was all on Goff.
Many of the others ... if we are going to be assigning blame ... have to be a 50/50 proposition, imo.
I love this kid. But I'm not naïve and know he's got more growing to do.
But I also acknowledge there are 21 other players on the field with him. Doing their "things" and they impact Goff.
