As I recall he had good coaching his first year under offensive coordinator Pat Shurmer. Problem was he left to be a head coach after that first year and coaching and supporting talent went to heck thereafter. Then of course came injuries and offensive coordinator position never achieved the level he had his first year. He was on his own which didn't turn out so well.
