There are many that have done poor analysis on what actually happened in the superbowl (by fans, experts, sports media etc) The facts speak a much different story, actually the results.
1) There were only 4 punts the entire game by the Rams and 3 of the 4 punts were after a short run. Only 1 time the entire game did the Rams punt during a 3 down sequence where there was all passes and that was when there was a sack. Basically, without a sack on that play. The following statement would be true.
If the Rams passed on any of the downs, there was never a punt.
2) 15 of the 17 of Faulk's runs can in the first 3 quarters and the first play of the 4th quarter and the Rams scored 3 points.
In the 4th quarter after the first play, when he only ran 2 times, the Rams scored 14 points
The big plays of this game were the turnovers with the pick 6 the biggest play of the game.
The criticism of Martz that is deserving is his decision on who to play right tackle, if anything. It definitely was not passing too much when they punted 1 time the entire game because of passing.
The best way to look at that game is this:
Again, when the Rams passed on one of the plays in a 3 down series, there was just 1 punt the entire game. The 14 points came in the 4th quarter when the run was completely abandoned.
