*His* window.
He took advantage, no doubt.
But ... I question the way he went about it. His comments about McVay and Goff seem to indicate he's still the same arrogant primadonna that he has always been.
Finally ... what ultimately closed the window for Martz was his inability to change and adapt and adjust. He was either way, way too stubborn ... or didn't have the ability to do those things.
Great coaches adapt.
Don Shula won a Super Bowl with a team that threw ten passes a game. A decade later, he coached the most-prolific passing game in NFL history to that point.
Bill Walsh built a deep-strike offense around a wunderkind named Greg Cook. When Cook's career ended prematurely, he re-built that offense horizontally in a way that played to the strengths of a pop-gun passer named Virgil Carter.
Chuck Noll's first world title teams were bangers. His final two were aerial circuses.
Great coaches ... adapt.
Martz never did.
It sure seems like McVay is one of those who can.
