Martz was simply fantastic and got players to play at the highest level. He motivated. They were prepared. And he put them in position to use their talents. In effect, his scheme did have a lot to do with the Rams success during those years. He found ways to create favorable matches with the talent and put them in position to succeed. I feel he was the most important piece to the puzzle on the greatest show offense and if others would have coached it, while it would have been good, it would not have reached the historic levels of success. I also think that the Rams would not have been as successful overall as a team.
Great talent doesn't always equate to great results or good talent doesn't equate to good results. Look at the difference between Goff and Gurley between last year and this year and 95% of that is the coaching.
Given that, I agree with you right now that If I had to choose, I would take McVay over Martz right now as he doesn't have any baggage.
I kind of disagree a little with some of what you posted, but Martz did have his problems and weaknesses. Horrific with the media. was 1-3 on defensive coordinators decision. Time Management late in games, etc. I don't see many weaknesses in McVay yet and see the same excellence in the offensive areas (Player Development, scheme, mental approach, game management, etc). I know the defense is bad right now, but I also like his choice for defensive coordinator. The only one I liked that Martz chose was Lovie Smith.
So basically you are getting all the great stuff without the unnecessary stuff.
