ARTICLE: Dickerson Gets Last Laugh

Eric Dickerson is probably the most famous Los Angeles Rams player in their history - this obviously discounts the team's time in St. Louis. Last year, Dickerson and former coach Jeff Fisher got into a bit of a public feud. Dickerson was critical of Fisher. Fisher then made sure Dickerson couldn't get access to the Rams' sideline. Then Fisher got fired, and Dickerson made a few more comments. Well now Dickerson can take a victory lap, because the Rams signed Dickerson to a one-day contract today - a little late right? - and announced he would be vice president of business development for the team.

The position is essentially ceremonial. It's not like Dickerson is going to be making huge business development deals. He won't be exploring partnerships with sponsors. He won't be working with local businesses to integrate Rams' activations. He essentially is going to show up to big-time events, and shake hands and kiss babies.
He'll still be one of the faces of the Rams and Rams coaches won't exactly be critical of Dickerson moving forward. He's cemented his role with the Rams. He will be there longer than any coach or player. He is now the elder statesman in the Rams organization. He won't lose that role unless he finds himself in some really controversial circumstances.
This is why teams and players should never pick fights with legends. Former players legacy are already written in stone. Troy Brown and Tedy Bruschi will always be loved by Patriots fans. Joe Namath can ask to kiss Suzy Kolber and he will be the face of the old Jets forever. Brian Urlacher can essentially say whatever he wants about Bears players. Michael Irvin will win any media battle when it comes to the Cowboys.
That's how the situation works. Fans only remember the good of former players who brought their teams to glory. There's no replacing memories. There's always options to replace a coach or a player - unless that coach or player is named Bill Belichick or Tom Brady.
Jeff Fisher was always in a losing battle. Eric Dickerson won. Now he's just rubbing Fisher's face in it.
