We all know that preseason performances mean something, but guarantee nothing.
That said, here is the question I think we should all be asking ourselves when evaluating Jared Goff...
If Jared Goff had played in his first 2 preseason games last year as he has in the last two weeks, would you have felt that he looked like the franchise QB he was drafted to become?I know that some will reflexively state that this question is loaded in Goff's favor, as he's not a rookie, he's a second year player.
Well... allow me to retort!
1. He only played in 7 regular season games last year.
2. He played in an undermanned, disorganized, and poorly designed offense.
3. He's only 22.
Given these facts, I think that you can discount the importance of last season to a point at which this year can almost be viewed as his part of his rookie campaign.
If you accept my premise, would you not agree that, in his first two preseason games this year, he has looked like a credible No. 1 overall QB (or, at least, a Top 10 pick)?
In my view, last year, Jared Goff had no chance to succeed. Now that he's playing in a real offense with some talent around him, he looks the part of a franchise QB in the making.
That DOES NOT MEAN HE WILL NECESSARILY GET THERE.
But, right now, I think he's back on track.
