Goff built off his Dallas game with a very strong performance. He was poised and accurate. His 2 deep throws were on point. Kupp was wide open but Goff was under immediate pressure from the back side (note: I have ALWAYS hated that play btw!!!) but he stayed cool and delivered. The second one to Watkins was perfectly thrown over his outside shoulder, I couldn't tell by either replay if Smith was holding Sammy's right arm? It was weird that he went up with only his left but that play will be a TD down the road. I also like how Goff throws the ball "nose down" when he throws it over the middle a la Peyton, Brady and other good QB's. It will prevent picks and save his receivers from taken too much of a beating. On the double TE's trying to block Mack, I thought Jared had enough time to get rid of it and it appeared to me there was a receiver open but not sure if I saw that correctly. It wasn't the greatest of efforts by either TE but when you slow that play down you can see Everret watching the Raider on his outside as that dude faked like he was coming too which caused GE to let up on his inside shoulder on Mack just enough to cause him to get to Goff.
Watch the check down to GE when he gains 20-30 yards but keep an eye on Watkins who is down the field. He IMMEDIATELY sees that Everret makes the catch and Sammy, without holding, gets on his defender in Boldin-esque manner and stays on him all the way through the catch and run giving GE additional yardage.
Some here will take this as some sort of insult but Kupp remind me a LOT of Amendola. A LOT. Not sure he has quite the "quick twitch" Danny did but he's got all the stones and better hands which is no knock on Danny who made some amazing catches in his career.
I'm coining the phrase right now:
"Super Kupp" - yes tee shirts are being printed as we speak so get yours while supplies last!
Coming off that great showing last night I believe they need to and WILL capitalize on it by signing Donald long term before our next game vs the Chargers and just keep the momentum flowing toward the ass-kicking-of-a-lifetime coming to the Colts week one!
The Rams have already hit a 3 run triple with McVay, all that's let for ME to see from him is; how he is in clock management in crunch time (when the REAL lights come on). How does he use his challenges? And, when the need arises, which is SURELY will, how does he handle team discipline? I LOVED on the FG drive when Goff got PO's at McVay for calling that TO right before the snap of the ball...as JG walks toward the sidelines McVay is cool as a cucumber and just gives Jared a little grin and says something to the effect of "it's ok, we got this.." Cool moment.
Other than that, this guy is almost too good to believe! The way he's able to not only scheme up plays to get guys open IN MOTION but also the rhythm and building pattern to his play calls. I have no idea how great the Rams will be this year but for the first time in a long, long time I have NO DOUBT they will be great again in the very near future!
Perhaps THE most important thing about McVay's offense to me is, it will not miss much of a beat if Goff misses some time due to injury as long as the next QB is at least an average NFL QB with a good brain, which Mannion is I believe, his schemes are that good. As Goff progresses and begins to expand plays by getting to his 3-4-5 reads and/or by breaking down the defenses by extending plays with his legs only to THROW the ball down field for huge gains a la the way Big Ben does it with his size, Rodgers and Brees with their uncanny pocket manipulation or Brady with his great OL play, THAT is when this team will be a major force on offense and, imo be at or near the 28-30 pts/game threshold again.
Gurley had good numbers but to ME there's something missing with this guy. The OL played well, gave him both a push to get to and beyond the LOS (after play1) and lanes to run through. The more I watch him the more I see Trent Richardson. Hope I'm wrong.
What was Greg-the-leg doing on kickoffs? Someone? ANYONE???
One bold prediction which is not-so-bold to me: Tavon Austin will lead this team in YPC. With Watkins on the field occupying the other teams best cb AND with McVay's uncanny abilities to get guys open
IN SPACE WHILE MOVING we are going to see Tavon do what he is meant to do and that is make people miss and score long, long touchdowns!
R.I.P. Nelson aka TonyHunter87 1971 - 2017 far too soon..
Your last words to me: "Your a great guy RFIP. I was very sad when you left the board, and your son, but was glad to see you back. Take care my friend, may God be by your side." 09/09/2017 12:58AM
No Nelson, you were a far better man than I, and I am sure an awesome husband and father as well. I will miss you my friend. -RFIP
