While I agree zn, at what cost to the Rams? We really do not have any idea what's been offered ,and I'm not even sure of the opt out clause so It really is all speculation at this point. I do know this though, 20 million a year will have a ripple effect on future players and their contracts. One question that I have is has there ever been an NFL contract with an opt out clause? It has really been the hot ticket for NBA players but their money is almost all guaranteed so only counts for cap purposes year to year. Do not think that the NFL could survive fully guaranteed deals more than year to year or maybe 2 years . Baseball is a prime example of horrible deals with guys hurt making 15,20,million a year for years without ever playing again. Can't see it with 53 players but who knows.
Yes it is all speculation. But that's the rumors we have so we have to do what we can with what we have. I hear you though.
Contracts go up. They just do. That genie is out of the bottle. It was out of the bottle a long time ago. That;s why Wilson got 21 M in 2015 and Carr got 25 M in 2017. Nothing the Rams do with or about Donald will change that. That genie is not going back in the bottle, if the bottle even still exists.
The NFL has a hard cap. It is impossible for the NFL to ever have an NBA type situation. That;s not a worry. As long as the hard cap exists, what you worry about cannot happen.
And---not all 53 players on a roster can hold out for big contracts anyway. What do you think would happen to Westbrooks if he held out for top guaranteed money? Easy. The Rams go, you're replaceable.
Donald is a unique type--a rare elite level DT, of the kind that belongs (or soon will belong) on a list with White, Olson, Lilly, Page, Greene, and Sapp among a few others. There are more good franchise level qbs in NFL history than elite DTs. He can make noise like this. A Westbrooks couldn;t, a Barwin couldn;t, a Havenstein couldn;t. This will never have bad repercussions among the other 52. It just doesn't work that way.
