First off I do not think Tavon learned enough under Fisher's regime to prepare him to pick up McVay's offense. It's not a hard offense, and McVay and this staff are by all reports great at teaching it, however I still suspect Tavon struggled with knowing the scheme and the requirements for precise routes.
Given that, I still suspect they've been trying to find a trade partner for him under the radar. Of course I could be way off on this one. But if my suspicion is correct the whole being sooo careful with the hamstring thing is a great way of not exposing what a non-fit he is.
If I'm wrong, and I probably am, then this is without a doubt in my mind his prove it season. If he doesn't play well for McVay this season he's gone. Think we can bank that. And if he does, well, I'm a happy fan.
Why would they set themselves up to take an additional 5 M cap hit this year on top of everything else?
When the simpler thing to do is take advantage and set him up to be productive.within this scheme, using him more in the 2015 mode.
