I played guard and TE in HS and a small college. I was undersized, but a pretty good blocker in a technical sense. I played on a really good Chicago area HS team and a low level college team, so my level of expertise is very limited.
But, no, I am not sure I understand modern blocking. It has become extremely complicated, and I always feel foggy trying to analyze a play. So I understand what you are saying.
Now, I think we miscommunicated. I don't believe I said "drive blocking." I would not be sure enough about what that means to use it.
What I think I said was that we have not for a decade driven a defense off the LOS. By that I mean, we have no passing threat to drive the DBs and LBs off the LOS as they deploy before the snap. Teams swarm the LOS and smother the running game AND attempted short throws.
That's why at least medium passing is so crucial. Repeatedly hit 8-20 yard passes, and you drive the defense off the LOS before the ball is hiked.
Apologies for poor expression.
