I'm not sure I do. You mentioned 'drive blocking'. Seems to me that's greatly evolved starting all the way back to when 1 back sets came into vogue. The another leap in evolution as teams ran more from the shotgun.
Note: NOT talking about short yardage situations here, like 4th and inches or a yard or two to go for a TD.
I READILY ADMIT that I could be wrong here but seems to me that from the 1 back and out of a shotgun 'holes' are meant to be created not by driving force as much as allowing the D to create the holes by their momentum. Obviously doesn't work well if your passing game is in the dumper and the D is playing 8 or 9 in the box. The object is to create 'lanes'... and RB's are expected to read that with the 'extra' time they have taking the handoff from a shotgun snap.
What I'm saying is, and this is NO excuse for our OL... but until our QB AND Passing game garners more respect 'new age' blocking for lanes is going to suffer. - JamesJM
