Gaines was not their starting CB. McVay unequivocally said that Webster was the other starter opposite Tru.
Wade has also said he feels much better about the DB's and depth than what everyone says we have. So maybe they were not as terribly thin at the position as you state.
Last I saw he was still a starter on the depth chart. He will likely start in Buffalo. And you know as well as I do that coaches always talk up what they have. That is not a good indicator for what they actually have. They are almost certainly thin at CB right now. Wasn't that long ago I listened to McVay talking up the WR corps......and then they went and got Watkins.
The depth chart listed Webster as the starter.
I guess my point about Wade talking up the position is that his talk was followed by actions. If they were so concerned about depth at the position, they probably would have the sense not to trade Gaines.
But their actions of trading some of their depth shows that they believe they have enough depth. Thus, maybe the thinness of the position is overstated.
