Re: A correct but nuanced reading

Snead appears to be the sort of GM who tries to provide what the HC's vision needs. I think that's one kind of GM competence.

A stronger GM might have his own vision and recruit a HC to fit it. Snead isn't that sort, at least for now.

It has nothing to do with "stronger." Your first sentence is correct. That's precisely the kind of GM Snead is, in a world where there's more than one kind of GM. It's a myth that GMs are all overlord types. That's not even what Armey was. That's not what Schneider is in Seattle. In many cases throughout the league the GM is a chief advisor to the coach on all matters of personnel and in charge of all personnel scouting, pro and college. That's not a failure to be a strong overlord GM like Polian---that's one type of GM in its own right. That's what Snead is.

His job, then, is to listen to coaches and see what kind of player fits their systems.

And Snead himself openly said why he bought in on the Robinson pick. He said top 10 picks are where you take a chance on transcendent talent.

That's what they did with Goff too.

For that matter, that same description can be applied to Everett, who does not have the background you normally expect for a 2nd rounder. Everett of course was not a top 10 pick, but he was a 1st pick. And a very McVay kind of first pick.

My point is, being the kind of GM Snead is, is not a failure to be a different kind of GM---it's a thing in its own right and common throughout the NFL.

My take is that Snead bought into the Robinson pick every bit as much as he bought in on the Everett pick. BOTH were drafted on potential. So Snead is no different.

BTW the prime mover behind the Robinson pick was Boudreau. In that case Fisher and Snead endorsed it because they saw a player with high potential, a high ceiling, supreme physical gifts. And at the time that was a common perception. Greg Cosells said of GR when he was picked that it was rare to see a man that big with feet like that and that in time he could be in the conversation for best tackles in league history. (Those were his words.) So it was not as if Snead and Fisher went against the grain on that one. A lot of that kind of thinking is just 20/20 hindsight.

Does the Watkins trade hint that GRob was not on Snead?
