They could have all the hope and confidence in the world about Goff, (I'm sure they do, to a great extent)... but they have the 'plan' for the worst... or at least entertain the possibility.
If they 'knew' about Goff I'm guessing AD, Watkins, and the other situations, they would be approaching all this very differently. - JamesJM
Just thinking out loud here.
IF Goff clearly earns a 2nd contract, by the time that comes around, cap space is just simply not going to be an issue. That's 2019-20. They will be loopy with cap space by the time Goff would be up.
IF they need to replace him I genuinely doubt free agency is the way to do it. Maybe there's a chance of that...maybe they are hoping for Cousins, and if so, yes paying 4 big contracts next year is probably not feasible. BUT it is also a good year to draft a qb....if they end up in a situation so bad that they need to move on from Goff in his 3rd year, which does not sound real likely to me.
So I am going to assume it's the normal situation where they aren't going to panic and make a run at Cousins or draft someone next year. I am going to assume he develops as planned and they can wait until they're in cap space heaven in 2019-20.
